  1. Hi Edward,I am planning on doing a fund raising bike ride from London to Ulan Bator to raise money for the Lotus refuge for the street kids and I came across your website. I am leaving in Oct/Nov 2005. My email is wanderer73@hotmail.com. Drop me a line, it would be good to meet up half way. I could do with asking a few on the road questions. Thanks Anton from London!!

  4. Hey, just a fellow bike adventurer checking out your site. Had to write a comment because I recognize Victoria and Daniel from my tour in Patagonia in early 1999; we shared a campsite with a road crew in some major winds on Ruta 40. I'm planning another big tour in November for a couple of years at least. If you're reading this Victoria and Daniel drop me an email at nootka_1@yahoo.com

Good luck with the touring everybody!

    Then I found your website.....

What can I to do appart from watch from the side lines in amazement at your endeavour?

PS I have a mortage, overdraft, children, wife and six goldfish to support. There must be something I can do, I know I'll write to my MP asking them to put you on a chat show as you'll have more to say and you could plug the book you need to write of your exploits....

best of luck with rest of trip. try to keep out of ditches, away from big trucks and generally out of trouble.

  10. hey punkers - . I like the picture of the Tuva music festival - nice alternative setting to Glastonbury! Also like the beard pics - U all look quite similar - WITH the beards I mean. The beard looks like it might have a life of its own - like its added another dimension to your outlook/ personality?! The sketch is good to. I'd like to try a mongolian dumpling - They look like my kind of thing.. Also the salted duck.

  13. Was glad to read your note on air travel, my own thought for years including the fact that I hate going to airports, spending time at airports and sitting smashed into an airline seat. Just read a similar article in the Guardian which I am forwarding along with yours to the huge number of people I know who fly just about constantly! Unfortunately ( at this moment in Bush time) I live in America and would like to see other worlds, so fly once a year.

  14. Edward, do please come and do a talk for the Bristol Wilderness Lectures season when you return! Interested to hear from another lecturer who cycled the length of South America, of his reliance on Kevlar tyres - puncture proof!
Take care, and enjoy yourself, Philip

  15. Hello Edward !!

Great to see that your on your move back to Europe :-)

Still enjoy memories from our meeting at mid-Siberia in 2004.

I couldnt help notice that your plans for 2008 (summer-autumn?) may be the same as mine:

"...2008 - North Cape to Gibraltar (speed ride). "

Though for my part, only 'slow running', lol. NO superman here...

With my best wishes & LOTS OF HAPPY DAYS on the roads :-)

  26. Hi Edward,

Great site and story, humorous introduction, thought-provoking ramblings, tenacious trip-reports, fascinating photos. All very well done! The definitive bookmark for bikers on China.

I hope I can some day summon the courage to leave home on the bike and head on out for a similarly long trip. (So far I have mostly done "short-time long-distance" bike rides, i.e. a couple hundred km on a day/weekend, see my website).

    Safe riding!

    Thomas.

  27. Hi - I had the pleasure of hearing you give a talk about your cycling expedition earlier this week at ye olde Exeter University as part of our Staff Development Day. As much fun as it was trying to work out I had the name Han Solo stuck to my forehead for the best part of half an hour, your talk was easily the best bit of the day so thank you for a very funny, inspirational and thought provoking morning :)

I shall be getting the book when it's published - my second hotly anticipated read of the year along with the last Harry Potter book :)

  31. regarding the Evans-Pritchard article under writings:

    Anthropologists = worthless human beings?

Have you read anything at all written by an anthropologist less than 30 years ago? Try Paul Farmer's Pathologies of Power for just one example of an anthropologist doing their damnedest to help the people they work with in ways that make sense to the people themselves rather than the IMF or Worldbank's far-removed planners.

I know too many good people who have spent their professional lives doing everything they can to help the people they work and collaborate with in whatever ways they can to find that comment about their "worthlessness" as anything other than utterly insulting.

  34. @Anonymous (28 Nov 2007):

Oh but my dear old thing. If you can find anywhere at all on my website where I have described anthropologists, jointly, severally, or otherwise, as "worthless", please let me know, and I will remedy the situation as fast as my tiny little fingers will allow.
